The Festival of Liberation

The Story of a Miraculous Liberation

The Frierdiker Rebbe

Yud Beis–Yud Gimmel Tammuz marks the miraculous liberation of the Frierdiker Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, from Soviet imprisonment in 1927.

At a time when Torah observance was outlawed and Jewish education was under relentless attack, the Frierdiker Rebbe courageously built an underground network of yeshivos, mikvaos, schools, and Jewish communities that kept Yiddishkeit alive throughout the Soviet Union.

His arrest sparked worldwide concern, and his miraculous release on Yud Beis and Yud Gimmel Tammuz became far more than a personal redemption. It became a victory for Torah, for Jewish faith, and for every Jew committed to living a life of Torah and mitzvos.

Special Yud Beis Tammuz Niggun

The Niggun of Liberation

This niggun was composed by R' Aharon Charitonov, the shochet of Nikolayev, to mark the release of the Frierdiker Rebbe from prison in 1927. It is known that he composed this niggun even before the Rebbe was freed, so firmly did he believe that the Rebbe would soon be released.

The joy expressed in this melody does not burst forth freely from the heart, but is instead carried by a profound trust in the ultimate goodness of Divine Providence, even in the face of unimaginable adversity.
